POINTE-A-LA-HACHE, La. (AP) - Thousands more dead fish have been found in Plaquemines Parish.
P.J. Hahn, director of Coastal Zone Management for the parish, says he and others were out on a boat Thursday behind the barrier island of Bay Joe Wise when they saw a huge fish kill that spanned at least a quarter-square mile in an area that was impacted by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
Hahn says the dead fish included sting rays, menhaden, catfish, speckled trout and redfish. It's the second large fish kill in the parish. Last week, thousands of fish were found floating in Bayou Chaland.
State officials said the earlier fish kill happened not because of the spill but after low tide and high temperatures caused low oxygen levels that suffocated the fish.
Hahn's calling for more testing of the area to determine whether oil is responsible for the latest kill.
