news10.net | SACRAMENTO, CA - Gov. Schwarzenegger has signed an order that will send the California National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to help stem illegal immigration.

Schwarzenegger indicated his support in June when President Obama announced the deployment of 1,200 National Guard members to secure the nation's southwestern border.

As part of that support. the governor's office announced Friday the temporary deployment of 224 California National Guard troops to the California-Mexico border.

Thomas Keegan, public affairs officer for the California National Guard, said 10 guard members are currently working on fence and road repairs at the border.

Keegan said they are asking guard members to volunteer for the assignment and expect them to be in place by Oct. 1. 

The troops, who will serve up to one year, will assist in border security and narcotics surveillance.
