euronews.net | Britain’s queen Elizabeth II has outlined the UK governments new policy agenda for the coming year.

In what was described by Prime Minister David Cameron as a ‘radical programme’ the speech included plans to reduce the deficit, hold a referendum on the electoral system and make major reforms to public services.

“My government’s legislative programme will be based on the principles of freedom, fairness and responsibility. The first priority is to reduce the deficit and restore economic growth,’‘ the Queen said.

She also said, ‘‘My government will work to reduce the threat from nuclear weapons and nuclear proliferation including the serious international concerns posed by Iran’s nuclear programme.”

The usual pomp and pageantry were present but this year’s state opening of parliament ushered in a political era of coalition not seen during the 84-year old sovereign’s reign.
