Tancredo was visiting the area today to meet with citizens regarding the violence on the border when he learned of the death of one of the meeting’s participants, a rancher who lived 25 miles from the U.S./Mexican border. Tancredo’s scheduled trip to Arizona had included speaking at a rally of 500 Tea Partiers in Sonoita, Arizona on Saturday. The rancher had last been heard from when he had called the Border Patrol to report illegal immigrants on his property. According to Tancredo, the dying man’s last words were to his brother by phone that he was going to help an illegal immigrant who appeared to need medical attention. In addition to the murder of the rancher, the gunman also shot Krentz’s dog. Law enforcement officials are following the assailant’s tracks hoping to capture him before he reaches the border.
