WASHINGTON, March 17 (UPI) -- One-quarter of U.S. adults agree with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that the 2001 terrorist attacks were fabricated, a poll released Wednesday said.
Two-thirds of those surveyed by the Canadian company Angus Reid Public Opinion agreed with the conclusions of the 9/11 Commission that the destruction of the World Trade Center and attack on the Pentagon were the work of al-Qaida. A slightly smaller number, 62 percent, specifically disagreed with Ahmadinejad's assertion the Sept. 11 attacks were carried out to give the Bush administration an excuse to invade Afghanistan.
There is some disagreement along party lines with 80 percent of Republicans, 66 percent of independents and 55 percent of Democrats disagreeing with Ahmadinejad.
Fifteen percent of those polled said they found credible two of the leading claims by about the attacks -- that the twin towers were brought down by a controlled demolition and that United Flight 93 was shot down over Pennsylvania.
The survey of 1,007 adults was conducted online March 9 and March 10. The margin of error is 3.1 percentage points either way
